Pressure Sounds’ second foray (the first was PS21 The Uniques "Watch This Sound") into the rocksteady era is “Red Bumb Ball” a twenty two track collection of some of the most beautiful and well crafted rocksteady music ever made.

Opening with the much versioned “Red Bumb Ball” by Lloyd & Devon and on to “I'm In A Rocking Mood” by Austin Faithful the pace never lets up as all the tracks feature the genius of Lynn Taitt & The Jets - THE band that defined the rocksteady period. Derrick Morgan is both producer and featured artist on this set which includes contributions from The Black Brothers, Roland Alphonso and The Viceroys. Great songs with beautiful harmonies, truly ensemble musicianship and progressive production techniques prevail throughout.

The fact that much of this music has been ignored and overlooked in the past is one that Pressure Sounds is hoping to readdress but we have waited until we could find the right material before attempting to compile a second rocksteady album. Presented with the usual care and attention to detail we feel we have finally found a “cracking” album with sleevenotes by Harry Hawke and exemplary artwork and packaging.

Wonderful

Some fantastic tunes here, especially the title track "Red Bumb Ball". Although seldom heard in this, it's original 1967 form it is very well known as the backing track for Shorty's "Hot Bomb".
Every song here is a winner, the rhythm hypnotic and the bass pulsing. These few years that were the transition from ska to reggae have a unique earthy feel about them and are massively under-represented in most collections.
The recordings are not pristine. Pressure Sounds have resisited the temptation to try to clean these recordings up with all of the losses that it causes. There is slight hiss and crackle all over the place, but it all adds to the feel and only makes it sound better.
If you are a newcomer who wants to know what rocksteady is all about, or want to add to your collection this is a must.

Killer Compilation !

Well Pressure Sounds have surpassed even their own high standards with this excellent release. Showcasing Derrick Morgn's crucial Rocksteady productions, this collection has obviously been put together with a lot of care and attention to detail. I have the 2 LP vinyl edition, which has detailed sleeve notes, really attractive artwork and labels with images from original Jamaican releases. Sound quality is consistently excellent, and most tracks sound like they were mastered from the original tapes. Quite simply, this a really outstanding release. Essential !

a little something different

this record is crazy. bought this alongside a couple other pressure sounds releases, and it easily smokes most of 'em, save maybe "aquarius," in terms of quality of content and unexpected awesomeness. this is the kind of stuff that makes me wish rocksteady had stuck around, that great bouncing oldschool sound with amazing, beautiful singing. wonderful stuff--you wont hear another compilation like this for years.

This is one of the best albums i've bought in years, superb rhythms and beautiful vocals. Even better as i bought it as a " cheap" compilation, and to get this stuff on record would cost a king's ransom. Highly recommended to everybody. Pressure sounds is - The Guv'nor.
